Police Debunk Viral ‘Boko Haram Arrest’ Claim in Abia, Warn Against Fake News

The Abia State Police Command has dismissed as false a viral video alleging that 488 Boko Haram members were recently arrested in the state, describing the claim as misleading and capable of inciting panic among residents.

In a press release issued on April 7, 2026, and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the Command clarified that the video in circulation is an old broadcast recorded over 11 years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Abia State.

The statement reaffirmed the commitment of the Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa, to its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property while sustaining the relative peace being enjoyed across the state. Residents were urged to continue their lawful activities without fear.

The Command also called on members of the public to support security efforts by rejecting misinformation. It advised residents to avoid sharing unverified content and instead rely on credible sources for accurate news and updated..

Warning against the spread of false information, the Commissioner of Police stressed that individuals found guilty of disseminating content capable of causing fear or unrest would face legal consequences. Offenders, he noted, would be prosecuted in line with relevant provisions of the law, including the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime (Prohibition/Prevention) Act.

The Police reiterated the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining peace and security, urging citizens to remain vigilant and committed to combating fake news.
