The Nigerian Senate, on Wednesday, paid glowing tribute to the late former President, General Muhammadu Buhari, calling on President Bola Tinubu to immortalize his legacy by naming a national monument in his honor.
During a plenary session in Abuja, senators eulogized Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria, highlighting his leadership as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and his tenure as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. The lawmakers praised his efforts in combating corruption, strengthening national security, and promoting agricultural development through various policy initiatives.
Senate President, in his remarks, described Buhari as a “symbol of integrity and discipline,” whose legacy deserved to be preserved for future generations. The motion, moved by Senator Adamu Aliero and seconded by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, received unanimous support from the lawmakers, who emphasized the need to honor Buhari’s service to the nation.
The Senate specifically urged President Tinubu to consider naming a prominent national monument, such as a major public infrastructure or institution, after the late former president. Suggestions included key landmarks like airports, highways, or federal institutions, though no specific monument was agreed upon during the session.
President Tinubu’s office has yet to respond to the Senate’s request, but sources indicate that the presidency may consult with stakeholders before making a decision. The call to honor Buhari comes amid ongoing national discussions about preserving the legacies of Nigeria’s past leaders.
The Senate also observed a minute of silence in Buhari’s memory and extended condolences to his family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large. Further deliberations on the proposed monument are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
